苦苣 치커리 (고거)

  1. 性寒, 味苦.

    성한, 미고.

    Its nature is cold and its taste is bitter — a cooling herb that clears heat and quenches thirst.

  2. 輕身少睡,

    경신소수,

    It lightens the body and reduces drowsiness, leaving the mind clearer and more alert.

  3. 調十二經脉,

    조십이경맥,

    It harmonizes the twelve meridians, balancing the flow of qi and blood throughout the body.

  4. 利五藏,

    이오장,

    It benefits the five viscera, supporting the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys alike.

  5. 療黃疸.

    요황달.

    It treats jaundice by clearing damp-heat accumulated in the liver, easing the yellow tint of skin and eyes.

  6. 苦苣卽野苣也.

    고거즉야거야.

    Kugŏ is simply yagŏ — the wild lettuce that grows freely in the fields.

  7. 一名褊苣.

    일명편거.

    It is also called p'yŏn'gŏ, a name drawn from its narrow, elongated leaves.

  8. 雖冷, 甚益人, 可久食之. 《本草》

    수랭, 심익인, 가구식지. 《본초》

    Though cold in nature, it greatly benefits people and may be eaten regularly over a long time, says the Bencao.

    Now we turn to the root, used as a separate medicinal part from the leaves.

  10. 主赤白痢及骨蒸. 《本草》

    주적백리급골증. 《본초》

    The root chiefly treats red and white dysentery as well as steaming-bone fever, easing bloody or mucous diarrhea and the deep low-grade heat felt within the bones, according to the Bencao.
