枳實 지실 (지실)

1. 性寒一云微寒, 味苦酸一云苦辛, 無毒.

   성한일운미한, 미고산일운고신, 무독.

   Its nature is cold (some say only slightly cold), the taste bitter and sour (or bitter and pungent), and it carries no toxicity.

2. 主皮膚苦痒.

   주피부고양.

   It treats severe, hard-to-bear itching of the skin.

3. 除痰癖, 消脹滿, 心下痞痛, 消宿食.

   제담벽, 소창만, 심하비통, 소숙식.

   It clears congealed phlegm masses in the flanks, eases bloating distension, relieves the stuffy ache below the heart, and breaks down food retained from the day before.

4. 木如橘而小, 葉如棖多刺.

   목여귤이소, 엽여탱다자.

   The tree resembles a tangerine but is smaller, and its leaves look like those of the bitter orange, bristling with many thorns.

5. 春生白花, 至秋結實.

   춘생백화, 지추결실.

   In spring it bears white blossoms, and by autumn the fruit ripens.

6. 七八月採, 暴乾.

   칠팔월채, 폭건.

   It is gathered in the seventh or eighth lunar month and thoroughly sun-dried.

7. 以飜肚, 如盆口脣狀, 須陳久者, 爲勝.

   이번두, 여분구순상, 수진구자, 위승.

   Choose pieces whose rind has curled outward like the lip around a bowl's mouth, and the longer they have been aged, the better.

8. 古云, 橘渡淮爲枳. 又云, 江南爲橘, 江北爲枳.

   고운, 귤도회위지. 우운, 강남위귤, 강북위지.

   An old saying holds that when tangerine crosses the Huai River it becomes jisil; another says it is tangerine south of the Yangtze and jisil to the north.

9. 今江南俱有橘枳, 江北有枳無橘, 此是別種, 非關變也. 《本草》

   금강남구유귤지, 강북유지무귤, 차시별종, 비관변야. 《본초》

   Yet today both tangerine and jisil grow south of the Yangtze, while north of it only jisil grows and no tangerine — they are simply distinct species, not one transformed into the other. 《Bencao》

10. 枳實瀉痰, 有衝墻倒壁之功. 水浸去瓤, 麩炒用. 《入門》

    지실사담, 유충장도벽지공. 수침거양, 부초용. 《입문》

    Jisil purges phlegm with such force it is said to ram walls and topple barriers. Soak it in water, scrape out the inner pulp, and stir-fry it with wheat bran before use. 《Ipmun》

11. 枳實不去瓤, 其效更速. 《丹心》

    지실불거양, 기효갱속. 《단심》

    If the pulp is left intact, jisil acts even more swiftly. 《Dansim》

    요수창, 폭풍골절련급. 《본초》

    It treats water-swelling that bloats the body and sudden wind that cramps and stiffens the joints. 《Bencao》

15. 主五痔, 大便下血. 《本草》

    주오치, 대변하혈. 《본초》

    It treats the five kinds of hemorrhoids and the passing of blood with the stool. 《Bencao》
