Original, read line by line

Its nature is very cold—some sources say merely cool—its taste sweet and sour, and it carries toxicity.

It primarily treats severe heat lodged in the chest and abdomen, cooling the fire that rises from within.

It is also said to open up obstructed menstruation, presumably by dispersing stagnation through its cooling quality.

For sores and swellings on the flanks, it serves to subdue inflamed tissue heated by inner fire.

For snake or insect bites, the crushed plant is applied directly to the wound—an echo of the old pharmacological logic of like answering like.

It grows everywhere, easily found along sunny paths and grassy edges where its red berries catch the eye.

Gather the stems and roots, pound them for juice, then drink it or apply it externally—a concise prescription from the Bencao that opens both an internal and an external path.
