羊躑躅 양척촉 (양척촉)

Original, read line by line 東醫寶鑑 · 탕액편 권3

1. 性溫, 味辛, 有大毒.

   성온, 미신, 유대독.

   Its nature is warm, its taste pungent, and it carries strong toxicity—a powerful drug not to be handled lightly.

2. 主溫瘧鬼疰蠱毒.

   주온학귀주고독.

   It treats warm-type malaria, mysterious wasting illnesses (gwiju), and poisoning from venomous insects (godok)—diseases the ancients reached for this drug to cure when little else worked.

3. 卽今躑躅花也.

   즉금척촉화야.

   This is none other than the cheokchok flower we know today—the azalea that paints spring mountains red, though as medicine it shows an entirely different face.

4. 羊誤食躑躅而死, 故以爲名.

   양오식척촉이사, 고이위명.

   Sheep that mistakenly graze on it stagger and die, which is how it earned the name 'sheep-staggering flower'—the name itself stands as a warning of its potency.

5. 三四月採, 乾. 《本草》

   삼사월채, 건. 본초.

   The flowers are gathered in the third or fourth month and carefully dried for use, as recorded in the Bencao.
