性平, 味苦, 有小毒.
성평, 미고, 유소독.
Its nature is neutral, its taste bitter, and it carries slight toxicity, so it should be used with care.

主喉痺咽痛, 水漿不入.
주후비인통, 수장불입.
It treats swollen, painful throat so severe that one cannot swallow even water, making it a classic remedy for acute throat ailments.

療老血在心脾間咳唾, 言語氣臭,
요노혈재심비간해타, 언어기취,
It addresses old stagnant blood lodged between the heart and spleen that causes coughing, phlegm, and foul breath when speaking, clearing away long-settled blood and mucus.

除積痰, 消結核.
제적담, 소결핵.
It dissolves accumulated phlegm and disperses hardened lumps, with its core strength being the ability to break up what has congealed.

It grows here and there in many places, and is easily found across our mountains and fields.

葉狹長橫張, 疏如翅羽狀, 故一名烏扇.
엽협장횡장, 소여시우상, 고일명오선.
Its narrow, long leaves spread sideways like sparse feathers of a bird, earning it the name Wushan, meaning crow’s fan, and the Korean name beombuchae also derives from this leaf shape.

根多鬚, 皮黃黑, 肉黃赤.
근다수, 피황흑, 육황적.
The root has many fine rootlets, with yellow-black skin and yellow-red flesh, and this rhizome is the part used as medicine.

三月九月採根, 日乾, 泔浸用之. 《本草》
삼월구월채근, 일건, 감침용지. 《본초》
The root is dug up in the third and ninth lunar months, dried in the sun, and soaked in rice-rinse water before use, a traditional method to soften toxicity and reduce irritation, as cited in the Bencao.
