胡桃 호두 (호도)

Original, read line by line 東醫寶鑑 · 탕액편 권2

1. 性平一云熱, 味甘, 無毒.

   성평일운열, 미감, 무독.

   Its nature is neutral, though some say it is warm. The taste is sweet and it is non-toxic.

2. 通經脉, 潤血脉, 黑鬢髮, 令人肥健.

   통경맥, 윤혈맥, 흑빈발, 영인비건.

   It opens the meridians, moistens the blood vessels, blackens the temple hair, and makes a person plump and strong.

3. 性熱, 不可多食, 能脫人眉, 動風故也.

   성열, 불가다식, 능탈인미, 동풍고야.

   Because its nature is warm, one should not eat too much; it can cause the eyebrows to fall out and stir up wind in the body.

4. 入夏禁食. 雖肥人而動風.

   입하금식. 수비인이동풍.

   It should be avoided once summer begins, because although it adds flesh, it also stirs wind.

5. 生南方.

   생남방.

   It grows in the southern regions.

6. 生實外有靑皮包之, 胡桃乃核也.

   생실외유청피포지, 호도내핵야.

   The fresh fruit is wrapped in a green outer husk, and what we call hodu is the hard inner pit.

7. 核中瓤爲胡桃肉.

   핵중양위호도육.

   The kernel inside the shell is called walnut meat.

8. 湯浸, 剝去肉上薄皮, 乃用.

   탕침, 박거육상박피, 내용.

   Soak it in hot water, peel off the thin skin covering the kernel, and then use it.

9. 胡桃瓤縮, 資其形以斂肺, 故能治肺氣喘促.

   호도양축, 자기형이렴폐, 고능치폐기천촉.

   The walnut kernel is wrinkled and shaped like the lungs, and by borrowing this form it gathers the lung qi inward, so it can treat shortness of breath caused by weakened lung qi.

10. 補腎治腰痛.

    보신치요통.

    It tonifies the kidneys and relieves lower-back pain.

11. 本出胡地, 生時外有靑皮, 形如桃, 故謂之胡桃. 《入門》

    본출호지, 생시외유청피, 형여도, 고위지호도. 《입문》

    It originally came from the northern Hu lands; when ripening, its green-husked shape resembles a peach, and so it was named hodo (Hu peach). From the Yixue Rumen.

12. 外靑皮

    외청피

    The outer green husk.

13. 卽生實上靑皮也.

    즉생실상청피야.

    This refers to the green husk that covers the fresh, unripe fruit.

14. 染鬚髮令黑. 《本草》

    염수발영흑. 《본초》

    It dyes the beard and hair black. From the Bencao.

15. 樹皮

    수피

    The bark of the walnut tree.

16. 止水痢, 可染褐.

    지수리, 가염갈.

    It stops watery diarrhea and can also be used to dye fabric brown.

17. 又斫樹取汁, 沐頭至黑. 《本草》

    우작수취즙, 목두지흑. 《본초》

    Also, by cutting the tree and collecting its sap to wash the hair, the hair turns black. From the Bencao.
