無灰酒 Jae An Neoheun Sul (재 안 넣은 술)

Muhoeju is liquor with nothing added to it. Brewers once stirred a little ash into wine to keep it from turning sour, and this is the wine that went without, hence 'ashless.' The Donguibogam defines it in a single line: unmixed liquor, nothing more.

  1. 不雜他物者, 卽醇酒也.

    It is liquor with nothing else mixed in — that is, pure liquor.

    HomiclubAsh was sometimes stirred into liquor to keep it from souring, and liquor left without it was called muhoe, "no ash." This was the liquor taken as the standard for medicinal use.
