黃連酒 Hwangnyeonju (황련주)
Hwangnyeonju is a wine steeped with hwangnyeon, the intensely bitter rhizome of goldthread. The Dongui Bogam enters it by name among the wines in the grains section and refers the reader to the new-formulas chapter for how it is made. Goldthread is still known chiefly for its bitterness.

It resolves the toxin of liquor and does not injure a person. The method is found in the Japbang (雜方, miscellaneous formulas) chapter.
HomiclubHwangnyeon (黃連, Coptis) is the rhizome of a perennial in the buttercup family. Its cut face is yellow and its bitterness so pronounced that it became the byword for a bitter drug.
