莖葉 Hwanggi Julgiwa Ip (황기 줄기와 잎)

Stem and Leaves (莖葉)

This entry covers the stem and leaves of astragalus (hwanggi). The Dongui Bogam places this short passage under its main entry on astragalus — which deals with the root — setting the plant's above-ground parts apart in their own section.

Astragalus is a perennial herb in the legume family. Its stems are covered with fine hairs, and its leaves are pinnately compound: each leaf is made up of several pairs of small leaflets attached opposite one another along a central stalk.

Today, the astragalus sold in herbal markets is almost entirely the root; the stem and leaves are rarely used.
