莙薘 Chard (Geundae)

Gundal is the leaf and stalk of chard, the same vegetable as the geundae in the crop guide. It belongs with the beets, and its leaves go into doenjang soup. Dongui Bogam says it grows plentifully in gardens and is widely eaten, but adds that too much of it upsets the stomach.

  1. 性平, 微毒.

    Its nature is neutral and it is slightly toxic.

    HomiclubGundal is geundae, chard. It is a leafy vegetable of one family with beet and spinach, eaten for both its broad blade and its thick stalk. The vegetable known in the West as Swiss chard is the same species.

  2. 補中, 下氣, 理脾氣, 去頭風, 利五藏.

    It supplements the center, sends qi downward, regulates spleen qi (脾氣), dispels dupung (頭風, head wind), and benefits the five viscera (五藏).

  3. 園圃中多有之, 人多食之. 然不可多食. 必破腹. 《本草》

    It is abundant in gardens and vegetable plots, and people eat much of it. Yet it must not be eaten in quantity, for it will surely upset the bowels. 《Boncho (本草)》
