根 Chikeori Ppuri (치커리 뿌리)
Chicory root appears in the Dongui Bogam not as a full entry of its own, but as a brief note appended to the preceding entry on gogeo (苦苣), referring simply to the root of that plant — the Bogam devotes only a single line to it. Chicory is a perennial herb of the daisy family (Asteraceae), anchored by a thick taproot that drives long and deep into the soil. In Europe, this root is dug up, roasted, and ground, then brewed and drunk as a coffee substitute.
