性溫一云熱, 味辛, 有毒.
성온일운열, 미신, 유독.
Its nature is warm, though some sources say hot. The flavor is pungent and it carries toxicity.

主散癰腫, 除風濕, 去瘴氣, 爛痃癖, 破冷除風, 建脾溫胃, 止霍亂轉筋, 辟溫疫, 療勞瘧, 去蠱毒, 療蛇蟲傷.
주산옹종, 제풍습, 거장기, 난현벽, 파냉제풍, 건비온위, 지곽란전근, 벽온역, 료노학, 거고독, 료사충상.
It disperses abscesses and swellings, expels wind-damp, drives off miasmic vapors, and breaks up abdominal masses. It dispels cold and wind, strengthens the spleen, and warms the stomach. It stops cholera with cramping, wards off epidemic fevers, treats taxation malaria, removes parasitic toxins, and heals snake and insect bites.

원포개종지, 경년자량.
It is widely cultivated in gardens and vegetable plots, and bulbs that have aged over a year are considered the best for medicine.

Garlic belongs to the pungent vegetables known as hun, those with a strong odor avoided in monastic diets.

今人謂葫爲大蒜, 性最葷臭, 不可食.
금인위호위대산, 성최훈취, 불가식.
People today call the variety hu the great garlic; its nature is the most acrid and malodorous, and it should not be eaten freely.

Long-term consumption injures the liver and weakens the eyes.

A bulb consisting of a single clove is called single-headed garlic; it dispels malign spirits and relieves pain.

It is frequently used in moxibustion recipes for treating abscesses and carbuncles.

It warms the middle, aids digestion, and stops vomiting and diarrhea from cholera. It treats parasitic toxins and is applied to snake and insect bites.

The Erya states that among the finest vegetables is the pungent herb of Yunmeng; its root and shoots resemble hu but are smaller and finer, and its pungent odor is equally strong.
