Baekgeo is a lettuce of the same group as the common kind, the plant the field guide calls sangchu. Donguibogam described it as looking much like ordinary lettuce but bearing white hairs on the leaf, and set it as a short entry right after wageo.

Its nature, taste, and use are the same as those of wageo (萵苣, lettuce), and its form too is similar, but it bears white hairs. 《Boncho (本草)》
