Spinach reached Korea by way of Persia and appears here under the old Korean name 'sigeunchae'. It is the same vegetable as the spinach in the crop guide, at its sweetest when it has wintered in an open field. The original text added a caution against eating too much of it.

性冷, 微毒.
Its nature is cold and it is slightly toxic.
HomiclubPareung is spinach. The name comes from Pareungguk, an old designation for the Persian lands, so the route by which it travelled survives in the name itself. It is of one family with chard and beet.

利五藏, 通腸胃熱, 解酒毒.
It benefits the five viscera (五藏), frees heat in the intestines and stomach, and resolves the toxin of liquor.

生圃中, 人常採食. 然不可多食, 令脚弱. 《本草》
It grows in vegetable plots and people gather and eat it regularly. Yet it must not be eaten in quantity, for it weakens the legs. 《Boncho (本草)》
